I found a math and science project that uses Excel and allows the students to track their household’s water usage on a typical Saturday. The lesson plan has the students record the information in Excel, compare their results with the rest of the class, and then come up with at least three ways they could conserve water. The spread sheet given is somewhat complete, but there are some changes that I would make. Overall the lesson plan is very thorough in its goals and objectives and brings attention to the possibility of water over usage within our society while teaching Excel to the students. This lesson plan can be used by students in middle school and high school.

Sharon, I like this plan for so many reasons. It requires the students to gather information that is relevant to their lives and to share and compare this information with their classmates. Perhaps my favorite part is he application of having them find ways to conserve water. This could be a project they could work on throughout the year, tracking water use and finding out what water conservation methods are most effective. Also this project gets the parents involved. I really like this one!
ReplyDeleteI believe this lesson is very beneficial because it incorporates science, mathematics, and well as technology into the activity, also placing an emphasis on water conservation. Students can see from the template how to create formulas in Excel to figure out the total number of gallons used. To make this lesson for older students, you could have the students figure out the formula to calculate the total number of gallons because the template automatically calculates the data for the students as it is now.
