Software

A growing number of educators feel that students should be taught the software applications they will have to know to succeed in the workplace. From the applications presented in this chapter, make a list of five applications you think every student should learn, from more important to less important. Explain your ranking. State how you will teach you students to use NEW software? What examples, tips, recommendations are available? Respond by commenting on this post.

  1. Five application software programs I think every student should learn are(in ranking order):
    1. Word Processing-most common is MS Word. This is ranked number 1 because of the variety of uses for this software. First step at getting a job will be creating a resume, which will most likely be done using a word processing program.
2.Presentation graphic software-most common is MS PowerPoint. As students they will use this frequently for school and college projects, as well as for presentations is the business world.
3.Multi-media software-examples: Real Player, Media Player. ranked 3rd because useful when making presentations more interesting.
4.Spreadsheet software-Ex: MS Excel and Lotus. Helpful in real world because it can be used to keep track of figures, such as spending, for money tracking purposes. Depending on one's career, this could need to be ranked higher.
5.Database software-Ex: MS Access. I ranked this as 5 because I have never been required to use it. However when job hunting, knowledge here will look good on a resume.
    (information above gathered from http://mcis.jsu.edu/faculty/malam/CS201-Lecture7.htm)
Teaching new software to students should be approached the same way as most new subjects: hands on practice is the key. It will be more difficult for teachers with one to no computers in the classroom because lots of lab time will be required, but still worth it. I would start by showing them a model that I had done with the software, perhaps also using a YouTube video if available. Then I would have them dive right into to practicing it in the classroom so we could all work together, under my guidance. If I get feedback from the students that they have this software available at home, I would assign homework for further practice. The Excel project we have due for this class has already helped me refresh my Excel knowledge and the posted information is very helpful too. I think having available examples online for students to view while doing homework is a great tip.

  2. The tope 5 software applications students need to know are:
    1) word
    2) excel
    3) powerpoint
    4) access
    5) encyclopedia

    1) Word or any type of software to write documents is by far the #1 software students should use. In every facet of life you will need to use a document writing software to write papers, letter, annoucements etc... Also, if you know how to use word using other software programs is easy
    2) Excel is important because this tool can help you graph and keep track of lots of data. It's especially important for business
3)Powerpoint is useful for presentation and not matter how old or what field of work you go in you will exeprience making a powerpoint presentation at least once in your life
    4) Access isn't as important, but still good to know. When you have too much data in excel access is the next logical step. It helps you keep track of multiple spreadsheet and other information
    5) The last software application children should know is how to use an encyclopedia online. As children are writing papers, the best way to look up information is using an encylopedia

I think the best way for students to learn how to use new software is to first be shown how to use it. Then for them to use it as you direct them how to. Next, I would let them fool around with the program, because I think the fastest way to learn a computer program is to just play around with it and see what happens.

  3. 1) Word Processing software – The most important because it is used for the creation, editing, and printing of text documents. This software has basically replaced a typewriter and is so much more user friendly. Some examples are MS Word, Works, and Word Pad.
    2) Multimedia Software – This one is next because within school ages, students are using this type of software very frequently. It allows students to be very creative and may discover unknown artistic talents that could shape their future careers. Some examples are Media Player and Real Player.
    3) Presentation Software – Creating visual presentations is commonly needed for school projects so learning how to use the application is vital. Slide shows will also be helpful for personal use, higher learning, and in future jobs. An example would be MS Power Point.
    4) Spread Sheet Software – This application is used to perform simple to complex calculations of numbers entered in rows and columns to maintain budget, financial statements, grade sheets, and sales records. During the school years it could be used to collect numerical data for projects. Some examples are MS Excel and Lotus 1-2-3.
    5) Database Software – The purpose of this software is to organize and manage data. It is a collection of data that can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications as well as databases with other users. Although school aged students may not have an immediate use for this software, its use may be needed depending on the type of career the student decides to pursue.
In order for me to teach my students how to use these software applications, I would first have to first learn and become familiar with the software. I would learn as much first-hand knowledge as possible and I would also have available resources such as video tutorials and books that have a complete explanation of the new software as needed to answer any questions posed by the class. Hands on experience would be used as well. Students today seem to be very tech savvy, but I think there would be a problem with retention of the new material unless it was used frequently.

  4. I think that the top 5 software applications that are important to teach in schools today are-
    1. Microsift Word - It has many uses such as for typing papers, creating newsletters, flyers, etc. I even use Word to type up emails because I like to use the spell checker and thesaurus.
    2. Powerpoint - Great for presentations! Teachers can use Powerpoint to present notes and students can use it for projects and presentations.
    3. Microsoft Publisher - I really like this software for creating newsletters. However, you can also use it to make greeting cards, post cards, brochures, calendars, etc.
    4. Microsoft Excel - Great for analyzing data. It makes complicated finding statistics much easier. Teachers can use this to keep track of grades and grade averages.
    5. Microsoft Outlook - I think this is important to be taught in schools simply because I STILL do not know how to use it and I wish that somebody had taught me.

  5. 1) Word Processing Software (Microsoft Word): Word is used by millions of people every day from typing resumes to typing a paper for English class. Word processing software such as Word is the most important software for students to learn because it will always be a part of the students’ lives. Teachers, doctors, lawyers, business men and women and almost every other profession use word documents to plan and even communicate ideas to colleagues. Word has become the basis for many things in life that used to be hand-written. Students need to be exposed to the software that is a main focus in our world today. Features such as Grammar Checker and AutoCorrect can help students enhance their spelling and grammar skills.
    2) Presentation Graphics Software (Microsoft PowerPoint): I believe PowerPoint is the next important software that students should learn how to use in school. It allows students to create presentations that communicate their ideas to their teachers and classmates in an engaging way. Teachers also use them to engage their students as they teach new topics. As the world continues to increasingly revolve around technology, more businesses and other professions will incorporate and require PowerPoint presentations. Professionals will use PowerPoint to present data, facts, and ideas in an appealing way to their colleagues.
    3) Desktop Publishing Software- With Publisher, students can design many documents—flyers, greeting cards, business cards, newsletters, and more. This software should be taught more in schools because it opens up so many opportunities for children to display their work. Students can make newsletters for their class and brochures about any topic they are learning. Even though you can do some of the same things in Word, Publisher provides templates that guide students with their projects. It is also used in the real world to promote and display information.
    4) Spreadsheet Software (Microsoft Excel): I believe learning about spreadsheets is important but not quite as important as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher because it is geared more toward business careers. Spreadsheet software is still very beneficial, however, because it allows students to organize numeric data and even create charts or graphs to compare the data in a new way. Students can create numerous charts and graphs when learning about how to make a bar graph, line graph, circle graph and more. It is used for finances as well as grading for teachers to calculate the numeric as well as the letter grade for their students.
    5) Video and Audio Editing Software (iMovie, iLife, Movie Maker and Final Cut)- This software may not directly be used in future careers, but by allowing students to use their imagination and creativity to produce and edit videos, students explore their talents and skills that may help them choose a career.
To teach students new software, I first need to learn the applications to a degree to which I can successfully explain in detail the features of the software. I will let the students first explore the application because students learn most effectively by doing. How I teach the software will depend on the age of the students. For elementary grades, some students have never been exposed to Microsoft Word, for example. In a lesson format, the teacher can show them how to bring up a blank document and ask them to type a short story (http://www.ehow.com/how_5067757_teach-microsoft-word-kids.html). Then you will show them how to save the document, change the font, and insert pictures, guiding them step by step. Older students, however, can have more freedom in their exploration. In general, after letting students explore, I will show them an example using the software that I have completed and walk them through creating one of their own, allowing them to ask me questions as they work. Tutorials can also be helpful for older students because it provides a visual model that they can pause and replay whenever they need help with the application.

  6. In my opinion, the five most important software applications that students should use are:
    Word
    Excel
    Powerpoint
    Publisher
    Anti-Virus

1). Word application is the most important feature I think that students should know how to use because in my experience going through school, I used this application more than anything else when doing projects such as term papers and writing down notes and storing them on my computer so I could use them to study.

2). Excel - this application can be difficult at times but once you learn all of the formulas and how to use the features that come with the program it can be very useful for any student or teacher. Excel can be used for keeping up with your grades and your averages and you can put in numbers on the next test to see what exactly you need to make to make your desired grade, it can also be very helpful for athletes wanting to keep up with their numbers in their sports.

3). Powerpoint - every student should know how to use and interpret this program because as they go along in their education, they will definitely be using this program to give presentations on projects and use it to take notes on their teacher’s presentations. With how much technology is used in the school system now days, a lot of teachers use this program in almost every class I was in going through high school and college in my experience.

4). Publisher - I never used this program much, but I feel like it is a very useful program, especially if you want to do anything dealing with business in the future as a profession. You can use this application to make brochures, newsletters, and calendars to help present information in their selected fields of work.

5). Anti-Virus - everybody that owns or uses a computer anywhere should know how to use and work a anit-virus program on their computers. There are so many people out there trying to implant virus’ and other harmful programs on other people’s computers to make them have to spend money to fix their computers. Knowing how to use these systems can help you keep your computer safe, save money, and also learn about what things are harmful and dangerous for your computer.

  7. 1) Microsoft Word
    2) Microsoft Powerpoint
    3) Microsoft Excel
    4) Microsoft Access
    5) Anti-virus

I rank these this way because I feel that it's most important to have Microsoft Word available and for all the kids to understand how this works because you have to use MS Word in so many ways to accomplish anything. Such as papers and resumes. Powerpoint comes second because of all the things you can present and understand. You can use powerpoints to show information to a group of people. I put excel third because everyone for teachers this is a back breaker. It's hard to understand at first because of formulas, but it can make your job so much easier. I think when you have access it allows you to have alot more subjects for bigger statistics that excel can't have. Finally, I put anit-virus last because I feel that it is important to know how to protect your computer because you can't do anything if it's crashed. You have to be able to know how to protect your computer and computer files just as much as anything else.

I feel what in order to teach new software you would have to teach it just like anything else. You would have to tell them what the goals and rules are while using the application and teach them how this is going to be useful later down the road.

  8. 1. Microsoft Word
    2. Web 2.0 Tools
    3. Microsoft Powerpoint
    4. Microsoft Excel
    5. Anit-Virus

I have ranked these from most important to less important. I would have to say that Microsoft Word would be the most important because everyone will use Microsoft Word the most throughout their school years for papers and other school activities.
Web 2.0 Tools are becoming very important in my opinion. This blog right now I am doing is considered a "Web 2.0 Tool" and they are becoming very important and important throughout the years. Students need to know how to use things like this because when college comes around it is up to the student to know what his or her is doing. Sometimes Web 2.0 Tools can be confusing.
Microsoft Powerpoint would have to be next. It is important because students will use it for school projects, presentations like for example your senior presentation you can use Microsoft Powerpoint to show everything you did for your senior project.
Microsoft Excel is more of a future thing you will use in life I would say. You can use it to balance out your money and other things that you would have to write down or type.
Anti-Virus isnt really important but everyone should know how to use and put it on their computer so they dont have any problems. You cant do anything if your computer is crashed from viruses and worst of all your computer might not work at all after you get a virus. That would be terrible.

  9. Top five software applications are...
    1.Word
    2.Excel
    3.Powerpoint
    4.Publisher
    5.Anti-virus

I ranked Microsoft word first because I believe it is the most used and the most basic software application used today by both businesses and schools. It can be used for writing papers, documents, resumes, ext. It is important that students know how to navigate this software because they will always be expected to know how to use this application.
I ranked Excel second because although not everyone is very comfortable with it, I think it is one the more useful applications, and with the right knwoledge is very beneficial, so teahcer with gradebooks, using it for spreadsheets with businesses, keeping records, mathematical equations, its possibilities are endless. I think it is important for students to learn it in school, and teach it in a way to connect it to real life situations, like the gradebook assignment.
Powerpoint was ranked third because I feel it is widely used by students, teachers, and presenters to show information in a nice orderly fashion. I know almost as much abou powerpoint as I do word and I think it is a valuable software application.
Publisher is something I think should be used more it schools. There are so many templates ans layouts, it is almost like an extension to word and can be used for more advanced projects, and make work look more professional and sophisticated.
Lastly I put anti-virus because keeping your computer and software safe is very imporatne to maintain and understand, and I think it is something that is looked over a lot of the times. Teacher computer safety is very important

  10. 1-Microsoft Word: This program is used so often throughout life that is simply HAS to be top 5. Word can be used for papers to turn in or even notes to type during class for yourself. Personally I don't know how I would function without word.

2-Powerpoint Presentation: I have used this program all throughout school as well. I feel like as important and helpful as it is now, when I am a teaching presenting a chapter or something to my class, there's nothing better to use than a bright Powerpoint presentation.

3-Microsoft Publisher-I like the fact that this program gives you all kinds of types and layouts such as newspapers or letters. You can create anything with this program.

4-Microsoft Excel- The assignment we just completed by making a gradebook really opened my eyes to how helpful Excel is. I pan to use it to help me calculate my student's grades in the future.

5-Microsoft Outlook- I picked this one because I never learned how to use it or what it can do. I think it could be an important program to know how to use. Also, tied for 5th is Anti-virus software, simply because computer safety is a very important aspect of using the inter
net and allowing your students to do the same.

  11. 1. Microsoft Word- I think that starting in Kindergarten, students should learn how to use Microsoft Word to create simple documents. Students will use this throughout their academic career, as well as into their career. You will always need to know how to write a paper in Word, insert clipart, graphics. Tables, and etc.

    2. Microsoft Powerpoint- I think it is crucial for students to become educated young on how to use Microsoft Powerpoint. It’s a good tool for creating great presentations and there are many different tools to utilize which some people may not even be familiar with. For example, you can change the settings on your powerpoint that will separate portions of your slide so it only appears as you explain, and hit the keyboard to signal the next point to be shown.

    3. Microsoft Excel- Students should learn how to make spreadsheets, charts, and graphs at a young age so they can efficiently use this software to enhance their learning throughout the rest of their academic year.

    4. Microsoft Publisher- Students should be taught at a young age to use publisher to make unique templates, flyers, or illustrations for projects.

    5. Kidspiration- I have recently learned about this software in my Edn 301 class. If students learn how to utilize this software, they can make timelines, pictographs, and engage in plenty of multimedia based lessons to advance their learning and have fun at the same time!

I can teach my students about these software applications by implementing them in my lessons. This can be in the form of group activities so students can work collaboratively or I can demonstrate these applications on the smartboard so they can then work individually. The kidspiration software even has lessons that students can engage in during class to learn about various topics. There are plenty of sites out there to give topics and “how-to’s” for different software. One blog I found for Microsoft Powerpoint was `http://www.ellenkinkelstein.com/pptblog/

  12. 1. Microsift Word - I think this software should be taught at a young age so that students can begin learning its many features before their first real essay is given to them in middle school or early high school. It is also a continued use for college and in the working world. You will always be expected to know how to write a paper, insert a clip art, graphics, tables, charts etc. Word is not only for papers but can be used for journal entries, and help writers write a book.
    2. Powerpoint - Best way to be creative with presenting your work. I use this more than ever here in college but I had to basically teach myself how to use it since I was not exposed to it much K-12. As a teacher i would start students using this program in the 6th grade and continue it through high school to prepare them for college and how much they may have to use it then. An example of a creative way to use it is to set animations with bullet points. By doing this your information will appear in the order you want to present it. You can set it to appear all at once or appear only after you click the mouse or the enter button.
    3. Microsoft Publisher - Another creative way to present information because it is great for creating newsletters, greeting cards, brochures (again I have done a lot in college myself)post cards, and calenders. Most students want other ways to show their creativity besides the tradition microsoft word and this is a great way to let them do that. I again would present this material to students in the 6th grade and beyond.
    4. Microsoft Excel - Great for math class and for students who are looking to go into engineering. It can also make life easier on teachers who have to average grades and easy to make charts with so if they do have that concerned parent calling they can easily tell them where their student is compared with the rest of the class.
    5. Microsoft Outlook - I see a trend in everyone else's post that they have not been taught how to use this program and I am like them. Teachers and people in the real world take for granted that because our generation is so computer savvy we already know how to use this when we do not. This should be exposed as early as possible so that it is not put in people top 5 useful things when there is so much more advanced programs out there.

I can teach my students to use these programs even in my physical/health education class by having them present different topics to the class using a different program each time. I realize it is not my job to teach them computer technology but at the same time if I incorporate target heart range using excel as a group project I can cover how to use excel in class a long with places to go for helpful tips, and then have them do the assignment.

  13. 1. Microsoft Word. I think that this software should be taught to students as early as possible. Students will use this throughout their educational careers. It is important that they not only know how to use it, but are actually comfortable enough to be experts with it as well. As educators, we can begin teaching children as young as 5 years old how to use it by just allowing them to see it, type with it, and click around. By the time these students are of age to begin typing school papers, they will be ready!
    2. Microsoft Powerpoint. This is another important software that can also be taught from an early age. It is the best way for students to present information in a creatively, effectively, and with organization. I think it is important for educators to teach students how to use this software because it is essential throughout the middle grades, high school, and beyond. Growing up, I was never given a step-by-step tutorial on how to use this software so I had to teach myself. I think it would be beneficial for students to be taught exactly how to use this so it can be used efficiently.
    3. Microsoft Publisher. I was never exposed to this software until this EDN 303 class! I think that this software is also very important and its uses should be taught to students. Publisher has many great uses for the classroom. Students can create their own newsletters, brochures, cards, calendars, etc. This is a way for students to demonstrate their creativity while using a wide variety of Publisher's educational tools.
    4. Microsoft Excel. This is another software that I was never taught how to use and had never heard of until this class. I also feel like it is a vital learning tool. It can be used in any class where students are to provide data in an organized way and create graphs (like in a math class.) Not only is this software helpful for students, but it is beneficial for teachers as well. Teachers can use Excel for their online grade book, attendance, and even to make online quizzes.
    5. Anti-virus. I think it is essential for everyone to know how to protect computers. This will save students and teachers lots of time, effort, and money. Being knowledgable about viruses and how to use the anti-virus software will eliminate inevitable issues later.

In my middle grades language arts class, I can incorporate the use of all of this software. Of course, my students will learn how to use Microsoft Word with their creative papers, journals, or research papers. My students can also use Microsoft Powerpoint to present projects. Writing and expression can also be done through Microsoft Publisher, whether I get them to make newsletters, brochures, or greeting cards. If I want them to show data that we have collected in an organized way, I will teach them how to use Excel. Last, but not least, I will introduce my students to the idea of anti-virus software and stress its importance. All of this software is relevant and essential to my course. As a teacher, I will try to teach my students how to use these programs efficiently to become successful for the rest of their educational careers.

  14. Top 5 software’s that students should know:
    1. Word- I think it’s very important for students to know how to use a word document throughout their school and life. I remember in grade school it was the first that I learned, and until this day I use it very often. It can range from doing something simple such as a typing a paper to creating a brochure or flyer.
    2. Powerpoint- This program is my number two pick, but I believe it can be just as important as Word. It’s important for students to learn how to maneuver their way through this program because it allows them to present their information or ideas to other classmates and teachers in a different way. It allows the students to become creative and enhances their creativity skills at the same time.
    3. Excel-For all the business majors or teachers, Excel is a good tool that should be learned by students as well. It helps with organizing a bulk of data and can also be put into different types of graphs. A lot of classes now are now expecting students to use Excel for assignments on a day to day basis.
    4. Publisher- I would say that publisher is a fun software that students shouldn’t mind wanting to learn. I believe this is important because like powerpoint it allows students to use their creativity skills and present others with a different view on their information being displayed. Publisher allows students to create brochures, flyers, newsletters and many other fun things. I like publisher because it provides templates to give students some guidance through their process.
    5. Outlook- I chose outlook because I had a class once where we tried to use this program but I still didn’t learn anything from it. I think it’s something that that technology teachers should focus a little more on to get their students involved with this program because I believe it could be just as important as the other software programs that I chose.
